He studied at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (film school in Mexico City).
He wrote his first feature film based on a widely known Mexican legend, "La llorona". He was immediately optioned by the Mexican mini-studio Lemon Films. He directed the horror film based on his own script "Kilómetro 31" - Km 31 - in 2007. As a result, it was the highest grossing film of 2007 in Mexico, and the number one Mexican horror film at the box office of all time. His first film also swept the Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards, with 6 nominations and a total of 5 statuettes.
The success of this film created the opportunity to direct the Hitchcockian psychological thriller "Blackout", released in 2008. The indie film was released in Mexico, UK and other European countries.
During the same period, he created, directed, wrote and produced the series "M13DOS" for Televisa, a prime-time horror anthology series for Mexican national channel XHGC. The series is one of the few "horror-themed" titles ever created for Mexican television.
In 2010, he debuted as a producer, with the successful book by Mexican writer Juan José Rodríguez entitled "Murder in a Chinese Laundry", the film was released in 2012 and finally titled "Reincarnation".
Rigoberto has also directed many different television series, gaining experience in a wide variety of genres. He helmed "Terminales" for Televisa, a successful drama series about a group of patients with common terminal illnesses, who become friends and support each other. The series was a huge success, and a remake was ordered in the United States.
Another series he directed was the action/drama for Channel 11 "Paramédicos"; a story loaded with intensity of real life cases of paramedics working in the Mexican Red Cross.
For Disney, Rigoberto directs a biography drama series portraying the famous Mexican singer Juan Gabriel. "Hasta que te conocí", starring Julian Roman ("Historia de un Crimen"), was a massive hit in Latin America and the Latino audience in the U.S., being nominated for the 45th International Emmy Awards.
After the resounding success of "KM31", he writes and directs the sequel, "Km31-2", also based on the legend of the weeping lady and released in 2016, with Carlos Aragón ("Señor Ávila", "Cantinflas"), a film nominated for Various Technical Achievement at the Mexican Academy Awards.
Rigoberto directs Netflix original "Diablero". The series got a great reception in Mexico, but surprisingly, more so with Latino audiences in the United States.
In recent months, Rigoberto directed and adapted for the screen "Sin origen" and produced "Karem's Diary", a possession / exorcism film based on true events, both films will be released in 2020. He also directed the 8 episodes of an Amazon Zombies themed series (working title "Narcos Vs. Zombies") to be released in 2020.
